Background. Maddy was born into a small family of love, however, her mother passed away soon after her birth, leaving her father to take care of himself and his only daughter. Her father came from a family of old money, who had immigrated to America to establish themselves and quickly found their footing in lucrative slave trading. ben was born as the second child of the Friedmann family and was seen as the heir to the family fortune and name. However, Benedict (mostly just called Ben) fell in love with a German immigrant of a lower social standing, causing outrage and ire from his family. After Ben was disowned by his family for marrying well below his social standing all the money went to his older brother, Isaak and he took over the family's old estate.
Time goes by and when Maddy turned 7 her father got the consumption and passed away, leaving a now orphaned daughter. Maddy was now alone until her estranged uncle so 'graciously' agreed to take her in. Living with him was hell and she hated every moment of it. During her younger years, she was supposed to be seen and not heard meanwhile Isaac garnered admiration from people around him who praised him for his 'grand gesture' and 'good heart'.
Behind the closed doors, the child was mistreated and beaten often as Isaak saw too much of his hated brother in her. As she grew into a young woman he become inappropriate with her, and the abuse worsened. He kept her locked in the house using her as a means for his sick fantasies and showing off how proper of a young lady she had become under his care and mentoring. Maddy bought her time, hiding and saving up money for the day she could finally run away and be free from her uncle's cruelty. The faithful day came and the girl packed some essential belongings before fleeing the estate and getting as far away from her uncle as possible. She wanted to start a new life where no one knew who she was and where her uncle couldn't find her. She tried looking for work to keep herself sustained, and an old physician ended up taking her in. He was like a loving grandfather to her, kind, patient, and understanding and adored the young woman. At first, she helped clean up and make food, sometimes helping him as a nurse, but along the way Maddy found a passion for what she was doing and the old man caught onto it. He soon became a mentor and taught Maddy everything he knew, urging her to further her career as a doctor, by applying to a college.
Maddy ended up applying to several colleges, but no one wanted to take her in. She's a woman after all. What good would come from a woman being a doctor? However, she was determined on succeeding and changed her tactics. Instead, she applied to smaller less prestigious colleges in hopes of getting into one. After several declines, she finally got the thing she hoped for a single acceptance letter arrived. She moved to New York to study, and while studying medicine she was scrutinized for being a woman, but her determination kept her going and she did end up getting her degree. When her college time was over, Maddy moved away again to start her practice always keeping in contact with the kind old physician. She sends him money and writes to him daily. Her practice is small and she aims to help poor women and children, who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford medical help, which also includes prostitutes and the like. Women who have suffered at the hands of men, and who have nowhere else to turn to for help will find comfort at Maddy's clinic.
